The DSC Councillors and Mayor certainly had their say on a range of topics today at the monthly meeting. The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival, a cycling event in September, while providing a big economic boost should be looked at with caution says the Mayor especially when it comes to closing the Captain Cook Highway. The other Councillors disagreed and there was much debate. But the big one was the elected officials going against staff recommendations that an out of Shire company undertake a big project for Council. Councillors voted to award Douglas Shire projects to local companies where possible. Today they pulled a two million dollar project from a Cairns outfit in favour of a local Douglas company and it seems in a post Covid world this will be the norm as our local economy recovers.
