Last night there was a gathering of the candidates for Council at Heritage Lodge hosted by the Daintree Marketing Cooperative (DMC). The DMC represents local businesses including tour operators, accommodation, restaurants, cafes and much more in the World Heritage area. With the exception of two new candidates it was a full house. Lawrence Mason from the DMC chats to Paul about how the function went and what his members got out of it.

The Mossman Bowls Club was the venue for the Douglas Shire Ratepayers Association's public forum featuring candidates for this months Local Government Elections on March 28th. A big crowd turned up to listen to the hopefuls, but two sitting Councillors gave the event a miss. One new candidate couldn't make it on doctors orders but will be back on the hustings soon, however Peter McKeown, Terry Melchert, Kym Rowley, Natalie Johnson, Steve Cruikshank, Lisa Scomazzon, Mayoral candidates Michael Kerr and the incumbent Julia Leu came along to reveal their vision for the Shire going forward. Candidate in the forthcoming Local Government election Kym Rowley is unhappy with the tactics of the Douglas Shire Sustainability Group in trying to pin down policies from new candidates before they've even been elected. The Tin Shed and Mossman Golf Club boss says the DSSG want to know what candidates will plan, budget and commit to. Kym says all of that is premature and impertinent from a group that only has 60 members. Besides says Kym we've heard it all before.
